Major part of A18 works to finish early but disruption this weekend
A KEY part of the road safety improvement project on the A18 is set to finish three weeks early but there may be disruption this weekend as additional work is carried out.
Works to install a right-turn lane to Utterby on Barton Street are now scheduled to be completed on Friday, October 2.
It originally began in May but was halted while investigative work was carried out on drainage issues at the junction.
It is the third stage in improvements to North East Lincolnshire’s boundary with Lincolnshire County Council, which is funding the work. Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “It is great to see the A18 improvements continue to progress at pace as we remain three weeks ahead of the original programme dates.
“Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and some additional drainage repairs we carried out for Lincolnshire County Council, Engie and the contractor have remained committed to delivering these road safety improvements as quickly and safely as possible.
“We understand the impact traffic management has on the A18 and engineers have worked tirelessly to ensure we can cause the least amount of disruption to residents and businesses. As we continue to plan for the final phase of the scheme, we continue to consider the traffic impact at each stage and engage with our stakeholders.” The council has previously announced that the final phase of the £2.8 million A18 road safety scheme will not be starting until the Toll Bar roundabout improvements are completed.
It says this will “help keep the local road network moving and reduce disruption to motorists”.
The final phase of works are due to start in early 2021 and will include the construction of a roundabout at the A18/Waltham Road junction.
Meanwhile, further works will begin this week to resolve “snagging issues” that have come following the completion of phase one in May which saw new right-turn lanes introduced at Laceby Manor Golf Course and the Oaklands Hall Hotel as well asother improvements including carriageway resurfacing and widening.
The council and Engie asked businesses to continue engaging with them to sort out any concerns they may experience adjusting to the new layout.
