IAN Holloway was impressed with Grimsby Town’s performance despite falling to a 2-0 defeat against league leaders Newport County. Former Mariner Padraig Amond once again got on the scoresheet against his old side as his penalty secured yet another win for the high-flying Exiles.

Scott Twine’s deflected free-kick had earlier given the visitors the lead, with Owen Windsor coming closest for the hosts as he struck the crossbar in the second half.

“I think the performance was very good,” Holloway said.

“We had a little bit of a wobble at the start, but I thought the performance was very good, apart from at the top end again.

“We’re getting chances and we’re not taking them, it’s a tad frustrating to say the least.

“But I felt we kept going, we kept working it, and we showed some really good stuff at times, but were a little bit shy in the right areas. “I thought we had the best chance of the game, a fantastic move, and I don’t know what happened but we didn’t hit the target. “Sometimes when things aren’t going your way, you’ve got to keep going and keep grinding away, and I felt every one of them kept going.” Holloway added: “I thought we kept them very quiet, but they scored two and we didn’t score any, so it’s bitterly disappointing for us because we’ve got a tough, tough run coming.

“We need some confidence from something. It’s very difficult to get confidence when you’re losing – for the people at the club, for the people sat at home thinking ‘not again’. “It’s really fine margins at the minute, and I can’t make excuses for people. We’ve lost again, but that’s a performance I would put my name to, and without all these injuries I think we might have got a couple.”
