GRIMSBY Town legend Craig Disley has backed Paul Hurst to turn things around at Blundell Park this season.

The Mariners find themselves in the relegation zone in League Two as they head into a crucial game against Southend United this afternoon.

Hurst has returned to the club for his second spell as manager, but arrives back in Cleethorpes with the side in dire straits and a huge job on his hands during the January transfer window. Disley of course played for six years with the Mariners, having been brought to the club by Hurst in 2011, and captained the side as they won promotion back to the

Football League with victory at Wembley.

And, speaking to the DN35 Podcast, the former Town skipper believes his old boss will be able to get the current side out of trouble. “The gaffer was someone we all wanted to play well for and do well for,” Disley said.

“Now he’s back at the club, hopefully when he gets the players in that he wants in, he’ll be able to rebuild that spirit and that team bond, it’ll show in performances and move the club in the right direction.

“I’ve no doubt he’s the right man to do that, and I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on with it all.”

Disley added: “I had a really good relationship with Paul. He’s a good people person, in terms of tactics I’ve not played with him for a few years now, but he’s a manager you want to play for and run through brick walls for.

“I’ve no doubt he’ll instil that in the team going forward, and I hope for a bright future. “Hursty was brilliant with me, but he was also a bit harsh on me at times because I think he saw me as the leader in the dressing room. “I wasn’t a big talker or shouter on the pitch, I was a sort of leadby-example type of captain. “He was harsh on me sometimes, but I think that was better for me as well because it kept me on my toes and made me up my standards and up my game for the team, and it worked out great in the end.”
