Boris Johnson accidentally praises ‘North WEST Lincolnshire’
BORIS Johnson hailed northern Lincolnshire’s vaccination programme as amongst the best in the country in a live address to the nation. However, the Prime Minister got his compass muddled and accidently referred to the area as ‘North West Lincolnshire’.
He is known for his unusual turns of phrase but you’re unlikely to find that area on any map.
It came as he was saluting the outstanding areas for immunising care home staff and residents against coronavirus.
Mr Johnson said in his televised Downing Street address: “Yesterday alone, we vaccinated around a quarter of a million people. With more than 40 per cent of care home residents vaccinated, we’re steadily protecting those most at risk.
“I pay particular tribute to the vaccination efforts going on in Cockermouth in Cumbria, Yately, and Cheltenham, where they have vaccination around 90 per cent of over 80s in their communities.
“I also pay tribute to North West Lincolnshire, to Sunderland and Morecombe Bay where vaccination teams have protected over 80 per cent of their care home residents. “It’s thanks to that amazing constellation of vaccination teams – doctors, nurses, armed forces, volunteers – that we’re building up immunity and protection.”
His slip of the tongue was quickly spotted on social media, with people enquiring where exactly North West Lincolnshire was. Charles Lewis asked: “Just which local authority is North WEST Lincolnshire?” while Jilly Cormier said: “I live in North East Lincolnshire, I didn’t know we had new neighbours!”
Mr Johnson certainly knows where Grimsby is, having visited several times and even sported a Grimsby Town hat.
It came as the Prime Minister announced no travellers would be allowed in the UK without a negative Covid test.
Fairways Care Home was the first in Grimsby to completely vaccinate its staff.
Team leader Stacey Keeley described the jab as “a game changer for all our staff and residents”, and said they felt lucky to have had it done.
