Case rates the best across England
THE Grimsby and Scunthorpe regions remain the two areas with the lowest coronavirus case rates in the country following the latest figures. The Government has confirmed that just over 50 new Covid cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours.
North East Lincolnshire saw 23 of these, taking the total to 6,568 throughout the pandemic.
A further 33 people tested positive in North Lincolnshire, where the overall total is 6,825. The NHS data for the week leading up to January 12 reports North East Lincolnshire was lowest, with 129 cases per 100,000 people.
North Lincolnshire was not far behind, with 141 cases per 100,000 population. Both have also seen significant improvements over the last week.
At the other end of the spectrum, Knowsley in Merseyside had 1,233 cases per 100,000 people over the same time period.
The good news for northern Lincolnshire came as the Government has taken drastic steps to keep out mutant strains of the virus.
A travel ban for everyone without a negative Covid test was introduced to stop the new variants being brought into the country.
The Prime Minister said last night that all travel corridors would be closed as of 4am on Monday. These measures are expected to last for at least a month. New strains have been identified in Brazil and South Africa which could pose additional threat to the UK population.
Mr Johnson said: “What you can’t have is a situation where you have new variants with unknown qualities coming in from abroad and that’s why we have set up the system to stop arrivals where new variants are a concern.”
