Requests for asylum fall

APPLICATIONS for asylum in the European Union fell by more than 30% in 2020 compared to the previous year, the bloc has said. This brings the number to its lowest level since 2013, according to the European Asylum Support Office. The asylum agency said that a decrease of 31% in the 27 member states plus Norway and Switzerland was mainly the result of travel restrictions put in place during the coronavirus pandemic.
