Streets to be left without bin collection for 3 weeks due to changing system

COLLECTION OF RECYCLING BINS SET TO CHANGE FROM FORTNIGHTLY TO MONTHLY

SOME streets in Grimsby will be left without green waste bin collections for three weeks due to the changing system.

The collection of the new recycling bins is set to change from fortnightly to monthly as of March 8, with the green standard waste bin being collected every fortnight as normal. The grey and blue recycling bins will be emptied on alternate fortnights.

However, due to the changing times, this means some residents will be going without a green bin collection for three weeks before the new schedule starts, rather than two.

Many residents in Scartho whose green bin was due to be emptied on March 8 have found the date now pushed back until March 15.

One householder said: “I’m not really sure why they’ve had to do it that way - surely the green bin collections could just have stayed the same?

“It’s the one that’s the most urgent with the type of waste in there - most people could probably hang on an extra week for their recycling, and that’s going to be monthly anyway, so it wouldn’t make any difference.

“I don’t really understand why they have done it this way.”

The council says only a small number of streets will have to wait an extra week, which is similar to the delays in collections which happen at Christmas. A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “With bin days and routes changing there will be an initial frequency change for some households.

“Some will gain a week and have a weekly collection for first two weeks, most will either gain or lose a few days and a small number will need to wait an extra week.

“For the averaged sized household this should be fine, as most domestic bins are not full after fortnightly collections. Similar short delays in collections occurred at Christmas and appeared not to cause issues for most households.

“However, we recognise that this may cause an issue for a few larger households. If people are concerned, have tried recycling as much as they can but still find that they have excess waste due to the change, we advise them to contact us to see how we can help.”
