Police warn ‘not to become complacent’

-

THERE were no fines for lockdown breaches issued to any visitors at Cleethorpes beach this weekend - but police have warned people “not to become complacent” with the end of the pandemic in sight.

It comes after crowds flocked to the resort during a weekend of fine lockdown weather. Cars were packed into parking areas and families were enjoying walks on the beach and prom. People were also queuing up for fish and chips before taking spaces on the seawall to enjoy their food. Mixed reactions from the local community followed, which prompted North East Lincolnshire council to remind people that lockdown is not yet over. And now the police have confirmed that no one was punished for breaching the rules. Humberside Police Assistant Chief Constable Paul Anderson said: “We are aware of reports showing Cleethorpes beach looking busier over the weekend. “Our officers continue to regularly patrol hot spot areas such as beaches and parks, and I am pleased to say that the majority of people have been able to enjoy their local outdoor areas safely over what has been a lovely, sunny weekend.

“There have been no fixed penalty notices issued over the weekend at Cleethorpes beach.

“As has been our approach throughout the pandemic, we are engaging, explaining and encouraging people to follow the restrictions set out to keep everyone safe. “We will use enforcement for those who repeatedly breach these restrictions, where engagement doesn’t resolve the issue or where someone has flagrantly breached the restrictions, for example, by organising a house party.” Although the country is still in lockdown, with a stay at home message in place, people are allowed to leave their homes once a day for exercise.

The scenes have been repeated across England as people head out of their homes for exercise and fresh air in the recent spell of fine weather.

Assistant Chief Constable Anderson added: “I want to remind people that we are still in lockdown, so it is important to continue abiding by the regulations which in turn help keep you and those around you safe. The end to this is in sight, especially as the vaccination programme continues at a fast pace, so I would just like to urge you not to become complacent.

“By following the restrictions set out now, we will be able to return to ‘normal’ life quicker.”
