Not everyone enjoys all the comforts of 21st century Britain

AT long last we are starting to move out of the straight-jacket known as lockdown. Mind you given the fantastic drop in the numbers of deaths, cases and hospital admissions, we’re going about as slow as Geoff Boycott batting on a bad day. And I write that as a fan of the greatest living Yorkshireman!

I’m also disappointed with one of the Government’s advertising posters telling people to meet friends outdoors where “in the fresh air… Covid 19 particles are blown away.”

It’s not that I doubt this scientific message, rather a case of questioning the accompanying photo of people relaxing in comfort round a back garden table. For this doesn’t necessarily ring true.

You see there are an awful lot of individuals in and around

Grimsby who live in flats or houses of multiple occupation. There are even more who reside in street-entry terrace properties, with a back yard rather than a proper garden.

So how are they going to meet their loved ones in the open air, unless they choose to gather in a public park or some other outdoor location which doesn’t give their group any degree of privacy?

I’m not arguing for one minute that they should be allowed to meet in their own homes, though I would love the Covid restrictions to be amended to permit this.

Rather I believe that this is another case of the powersthat-be not really understanding what life is like for those who don’t enjoy all the comforts of 21st century Britain.
