Two Lincolnshire fish and chip shops make UK’s top list

... BUT CHIPPIES IN GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES MISS OUT

TWO Lincolnshire fish and chip takeaways have been named amongst the very best in the country – however not a single North East Lincolnshire chippy received a mention.

Fry Magazine published their coveted Top 50 list of the best takeaways, which is the gold standard for the fish and chip industry. Chippies in Louth and near Scunthorpe were praised, but surprisingly there were no awards for North East Lincolnshire, which is famed for its fish and chips. Davenport’s Fish & Chips in Louth town centre on Eastgate was one of Fry’s top 50 takeaways, Lincolnshire Live reports. Market Hill Fisheries in Winterton, North Lincolnshire, also made the list for the second year running.

The magazine is known for its extremely strict standards. Shops were assessed by mystery tasters on the flakiness of the fish, the crunch of the batter and the crispness of the chips, as well as their Covid safety.

The benchmark for making the list was 97 per cent of reviewers loving what was on offer, the highest in its history.

Chippies in Lincoln, Boston and Grantham have made it onto the list in recent years, but it’s been some time since Grimsby or Cleethorpes was represented. Ryan from Market Hill Fisheries said: “I would just like to thank all our staff for their hard work and also all of our customers and the community we are in for their support over the years, especially the last one which has been hard on everyone.

“We’re obviously in a county with great fish and chip shops wherever you go within it, most shops have adapted quickly over the past year to be able to keep serving their customers through the lockdowns and helping out their own communities.

“On an individual business level, it’s great to have been recognised as providing a high standard of product and service by Fry Magazine for the second year in a row by making their top 50 again!” Reece Head, the competition organiser, said: “Without doubt, the last 12 months have been tough for fish and chip operators and many will not have dealt with this level of crisis management before.

“Allowed to operate during the pandemic, there was a lot they had to implement in a very short space of time to operate in a Covid-safe manner. Many takeaways had to flip their businesses to click and collect and delivery, serve at the door, introduce card payments and work in much smaller teams.”
