NORTHERN Lincolnshire’s longest ventilated Covid survivor has left intensive care after two months fighting the virus.

Martin Staves has been in Scunthorpe ICU for the last 61 days after falling seriously ill with coronavirus. He’s now finally on the road to recovery.

Masked staff lined the corridors to applaud him as he was finally discharged from the ICU on Tuesday, April 20.

The touching video shows him giving a thumbs-up to his carers as he is wheeled out.

Martin’s wife Dawn paid an emotional tribute to the staff who worked around the clock to treat him, and said he would be back when he had fully recovered to thank them. “Once again, I cannot thank you enough for saving my husband’s life and never giving up on him,” she said to staff.

“I will never forget what you all have done. One day, Martin will walk on your ward to see you all and say thank you.”

She added that seeing the video of his guard of honour in the ICU “brings tears once again”, and said: “You all are one amazing team I will never forget.”

Amanda Holmes, the ICU manager at Scunthorpe General Hospital, run by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation said: “Martin is our longest Covid-19 ventilated survivor, having spent 61 days with us.

“His wife, Dawn, brought in cake, tea, coffee and biscuits for the staff as a thank you.”

There are now just 15 patients with coronavirus being treated by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust, as of Wednesday morning. Five people were in Grimsby and 10 at Scunthorpe. One person in Scunthorpe remained in ICU at the time while 450 people with coronavirus have passed away in the care of the trust to date.
