New Indian street food restaurant aims to bring flavour of West Bengal to our resort

PROPOSAL FOR SEA VIEW STREET VENUE GOES BEFORE PLANNERS NEXT WEEK

A NEW Indian restaurant due to open on Sea View Street is promising to bring a flavour of West Bengal to Cleethorpes. Calcutta Street Kitchen Indian Restaurant is planned to open at 17 Sea View Street which was most recently Tilletts Clothing. The plans for the new venue will appear before a council licensing committee meeting next Tuesday (May 11) as the owners look to put the finishing touches to the development.

The application has drawn one passionate note of opposition from a neighbouring business owner but the restaurant’s new manager insists it will be an asset to the area.

Restaurant manager Raja Choudhury said: “We’re really looking forward to bringing something new to Cleethorpes, we’ve looked around and we think we’ll be bringing a different flavour to the area. “We’ve got a focus on Indian street food so there will be loads of smaller dishes like Vada Pav and Telebhaja that people will be able to order and share around the table. “We will still be serving a lot of the classic dishes like Chicken Tikka but it won’t be an extensive menu for that sort of thing. “I think it is important to try to offer something that people haven’t tried before so we’ll be working with a lot of the local seafood to make dishes with Grimsby cod and halibut.

“These we’ll be using to create signature dishes like a seafood Rogan Josh and we really can’t wait to open the doors and for people to try the dishes that we’ve got in mind.

“We think what we’re offering with the new restaurant will only enhance Sea View Street and we’re really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

One objection to the plans has been accepted by the licensing officer for the owner of neighbouring retail businesses P & L Interiors at 23 Sea View Street.

The objection from Mr Gardner said: “Sea View Street is first and foremost a retail and residential area. The council promote it as a family-friendly shopping area. This is going to push the street into a bar area. “The street has already got problems with anti-social behaviour in the daytime over the weekends .

“We have stag and hen functions spilling into the street. This is supposed to be a family friendly area, would you want your children down the street with groups of drunken people swearing and moving around in large groups?

“The name suggests it is a restaurant but it is not, it is a bar. [The] residential properties above the shops would become unliveable in due to the noise.

“The traders have suffered with all the lockdown problems and this would be a nail in the coffin for many.”

The report drawn up by the Licensing Officer does not give any indications as to the decision that the council may take in this instance, their only observations were to recognise the representations given and remind the council of its right to decline or approve the application.
