Council needs to be more flexible at the refuse site

- Name and address supplied.

IN recent years the Grimsby Telegraph has reported many times of places in and around our town, not forgetting the surrounding countryside, of people sadly fly-tipping all sorts of rubbish or discarded items in laybys, alleyways or any vacated land that happens to be handy to dump their unwanted stuff.

On bank holiday Monday I had some household waste to dispose of so I made a trip to our local refuse site on Gilbey Road only to be met by a site operative at the entrance who asked if I had pre-booked in the vehicle I was driving, to which I replied no.

The vehicle I was driving was a VW Caddy with five seats and a normal size boot for that type of vehicle - not a small or large van or any other commercial vehicle. The site operative explained that larger vehicles like Range Rovers, BMWs and cars with trailers were supposed to pre-book in order to discharge their load and, as I understand it, only make one site visit per day.

On this occasion I was allowed to empty my vehicle.

The council needs to be more flexible between family cars of any size and commercial vehicles otherwise this attitude of limited trips to the site will encourage people to dump their unwanted stuff elsewhere, especially if they are on a time limit not to mention getting into arguments with the staff at the site.

I fail to see the council’s logic of limited trips to the tip as it is not as if your rubbish is going to move itself or melt away.

Plus it’s not a pleasurable experience getting rid of rubbish, especially on a miserable day with sometimes having to wait in a long queue at the refuse site.

So come on council, discard some of your site restrictions and encourage the people who are trying to do the right thing.
