DUNROBIN CASTLE

-

Resembling a French chateau with its fairytale spires and turrets, Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and overlooks the Moray Firth. The largest property in the Northern Highlands with a whopping 189 rooms, it dates back to the early 1300s, and has been home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.

Architect Sir Charles Barry remodelled the castle from a fort to a house in the Scottish baronial style, but much of his interior was destroyed by fire in 1915.

Today’s look is mainly the work of Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, who altered the top of the main tower and clock tower to the Scottish Renaissance style. Take a self-guided tour of the state rooms, then visit the Victorian museum and formal gardens and enjoy the falconry displays.
