ALNWICK CASTLE, NORTHUMBERLAND

-

Known as the Windsor of the North, and the UK’s second largest inhabited castle, it has acted as a military outpost and a teaching college as well as a home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, for more than 700 years. With its origins in the Norman period, the fortress will be recognisable to Harry Potter fans – the wizarding hero is seen flying on a broomstick within its walls in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It has also featured in Downton Abbey, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Elizabeth.
