RESIDENTS fear a child could be hurt next after a pet who was regularly seen by passers-by on one of Grimsby’s busiest roads was knocked down and killed.

Around 900 Havelock Academy students use Carr Lane, which leads on to Holyoake Road. It is also a popular route for children heading to and from Cleethorpes Academy, Beacon Academy and Bursar Academy. emy RachaelWallace Rachael Wallace is terrified the same thing that happened to her family’s pet cat ‘Lucky’ could easily happen to a pupil.

The mother of three said the eightyear-old rescue cat knew the streets well but died when he was knocked over at around 8am on June 9, just before children were heading to school.

Rachael said: “He was boss of the street and knew when it was school time. But motorists go speeding up and down all the time. There have been so many near misses.

“We are devastated at the loss of our beloved pet, which could have been avoided completely. Something needs doing before a child is killed. kil My partner had ha to pull a girl back ba from the roa road one time oth otherwise she would wo have been hit by a car.

“The police put the mobile speed camera in the road from time to time. But that doesn’t deter drivers.”

Residents last year called for the speed limit to be reduced to 20mph.

Leaders at Havelock Academy backed the campaign when it was launched last year following injury to a school girl knocked down by a car. But since then nothing has happened.

After the 13-year-old school girl suffered a broken arm and broken leg in a collision in January last year, Humberside Police community beat manager, PC Nick Gibbs said: “We need to improve road safety on the Carr Lane corridor. People were saying it is an accident waiting to happen. Then it happened. fortunately the girl is recovering.

“But motorists need to slow down and be aware there are hundreds of schoolchildren walking on Carr Lane and trying to cross the road at the start of the school day and after school.”

Road safety agency, Safer Roads Humber stationed a mobile speed camera more often and officers lead road safety lessons at Havelock Academy.

Road safety lessons also continue regularly at Havelock Academy.

Emma Marshall, principal at Havelock Academy said: “We continue to work hard to educate our students about the importance of road safety and aim to have a staff presence in the community at the start and end of each school day.

“We have built into our tutorial programme a strong message about road safety and we regularly remind all members of our community to drive safely when visiting our school site, including parents, visitors and staff.”
