ACTOR Stephen Graham was going to adopt Grimsby’s Thomas Turgoose after his mum died with cancer.

The Grimsby-born actor played Shaun Fields in This is England alongside Stephen Graham when he was just 14.

His mum, Sharon Turgoose, sadly died of cancer before being able to watch her son on the big screen.

Thomas has spoken about the promise Stephen made to his late mum on this week’s Private Parts podcast, hosted by Jamie Laing and Francis Boulle.

He said: “My mum passed away from lung cancer after I finished filming This Is England. She never got to see the finished film.

“Shane Meadows dedicated the film to my mum.

“Stephen Graham promised my mum he’d look out for me. Everyone involved in This is England are family to me.”

But Stephen Graham, who is currently starring in the BBC Sunday night drama, Time, wasn’t the only person ready to step up to offer Thomas a home as director Shane Meadows was also going to adopt him, according to Thomas.

He added: “When my mum died I moved in with my dad and I didn’t know him so Shane Meadows and Steven Graham were going to adopt me if things didn’t work out with my dad.”

Thomas invited his This is England costars to his private wedding on New Year’s Eve in 2018.

He was joined by on-screen mum Jo Hartley (Cynth), Vicky McClure (Lol), Andrew Shim (Milky), Stephen Graham (Combo) and Andrew Ellis (Gadget).

On Twitter, Thomas said: “My love heart emoji has taken a battering today. Thanks for all your love, now it’s time to celebrate married life in Miami with Charlotte Revell. Get that sexy underwear out girl.”

In March this year, 29-year-old Thomas revealed that he is going to become a dad for the first time.

He announced the special news on Instagram. He posted a picture of the sonogram next to a board which reads: “We’ve been keeping a little secret… 17.09.2021.”

Speaking about his career, he told NME: “I got given the opportunity but I worked my a*** off.

“I want to work and I want to show my mum that, OK, I was a little s*** when I was a kid - but now I’m a man and I work hard and I’ve got a lot to be grateful for.”
