FORMER Grimsby Town youngster Ben Grist has signed his first professional contract with Leicester City.

The boyhood Mariner left DN35 in the summer for a move to the Foxes, with a series of Premier League outfits chasing his signature.

Leicester beat Manchester United to the talented midfielder, while the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea were also credited with an interest.

After just a few months at the King Power Stadium, Grist has been rewarded for his performances in their Under-18 set-up with a maiden deal.

The 16-year-old initially signed as a first-year scholar but Leicester have committed to a longer deal. The boyhood Town fan posted on his social media accounts to announce the contract, writing: “Proud moment for me and my family to sign my first professional contract @LCFC.”

Speaking to Grimsby Live about his move in July, Grist said: “It’s a great opportunity. I’m really sad to be leaving Grimsby because it’s who I’ve supported since I was a little kid, but I’m really excited to see what happens in the future and see how I progress.

“Thanks to Neil Woods for playing me regularly in the 18s, which has really helped me progress, and without him, I wouldn’t have this opportunity right now.

“Just a thank you to all the coaches and players I’ve played with over the years. Grimsby will always have a special place in my heart.

“Me and my dad are massive fans, and we have been since I was a little kid. It’ll be the first fixture I look for on a Saturday, and we’re hopefully going to get back for as many games as we can.”
