‘Put the money back into the community’

Visitors to our Facebook page have had their say on our story about the major £5 million Corporation Bridge restoration work which will start this summer:

- By Derek Pike

■ Ben Hedison: The first thing that hits you coming off the A180 is how the town looks like a ghetto, but a £5 million bridge restoration is needed.

■ Nicky England: What an absolute waste of money. Just like the millions wasted on the Suggitt’s Lane crossing that wasn’t needed either. ■ Michelle Gordon: What about improving roads, cleaning areas that are always fly-tipped, oh maybe even do more for those who can’t afford to live? Because I’m sure the bridge, as beautiful as it is, can do without all the money.

■ Claire Graves: Will all the other road works around the town be completed first before work is started on this?

■ Steve Farrell: Great news, such a great bridge that brings so much joy to thousands of tourists who come to visit it each year.

■ Pete Al: What’s the point? All the dock needs dredging before any boat can get up there.

■ Paul Wheatley: The A180 prevents anything big enough for the bridge to require opening from getting there.

■ Lewis Parker: £5 million, is this the budget for how long it’s going to get dragged out for? There’s so much more Grimsby could benefit from with a £5 million budget. What a waste of our money.

■ Holly Walker: Like children’s play areas/parks, especially the one on the Nunsthorpe estate. Didn’t this bridge just get done not so long ago before the one further up was?

■ Lewis Parker: I’ve been here 11 years and all I’ve ever seen them spend money on is bridges and bus stations.

■ Chris Norris: I worked on the last refurbishment when I was an apprentice for Grimsby council in 1972. I’m now retired, so it’s lasted pretty well.

■ Paul Wheatley: But why? There is no need for the bridge to open, nothing big enough that would require the bridge to open can get under the A180.

■ Dave Thompson: Put the money back into the community. Our town is going to wrack and ruin.

■ Rick Parkinson: Wow, Peaks Parkway, Toll Bar, the town is at a standstill now. I’m buying a helicopter I think.
