Deputy Mayor sees democracy in action during academy visit
We should encourage young people to be a valid part of our local community – The youngsters are really enjoying themselves in pleasant surroundings
THE Deputy Mayor of North East Lincolnshire praised democracy in action on a visit to Reynolds Academy as he met members of the School Council.
Cllr Steve Beasant said that after the poor turnout in the recent elections, he feels it is now more important than ever to inspire young people to get involved in decisions which affect them.
He said: “Children need to learn to make decisions. The school council teaches them about democracy, which is very important because a lot of youngsters get turned off by politicians. In the recent elections the turnout was abysmal, so let’s get children interested and engaged in politics early on.”
The Deputy Mayor said that, as he nears 70 years of age, he feels it is important for him to meet young people.
“I am getting to that stage in my life where it is important for me to get back to reality, to see what affects children, see what their concerns are and, hopefully, I would love to implement p some of the decisions that children make.
“It is absolutely great to see them asking questions of me, and some difficult questions too. I like to be honest with them, so if we cannot afford to do something we should be telling tell them that. We should sho encourage young yo people to be a valid part of our local lo community.”
Cllr Beasant said he was really pleased to have been able to tour the Academy and meet the children.
“I have really enjoyed it. The children are absolutely fantastic. The youngsters are really enjoying themselves in pleasant surroundings and the school is really well laid out. It has been a pleasure.”
Rebecca Scott, Reynolds Academy Principal, said the Deputy Mayor’s visit had really impressed the children and they were all eager to show him what they are doing in school.
“At Reynolds Academy we consider ourselves a family and we learn from each other. Giving pupils the chance to put forward their ideas through the School Council gives them some ownership of their school and promotes pride and enthusiasm for continuing to make

Before he left, the Foundation Stage children treated The Deputy Mayor to a sneak preview of their rehearsals for their Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, which will take place next week.
