GRIMSBY Town fans will not be able to watch Saturday’s National League playoff to Wrexham at Blundell Park - despite every effort from the club to try and make it happen.

Grimsby Town officials had been working hard to secure permission to broadcast Saturday’s match to fans who were unable to secure tickets for the big game.

The club wanted to install external screens within Blundell Park and open a section of the ground so supporters could watch the game together in a mini-matchday. The club’s McMenemy’s function suite is unavailable due to a prior booking and the Mariners Trust bar is currently being refurbished.

But getting permission to install screens proved far from straight forward, including the current pitch renovations which began last week. Despite their best efforts, the club has been unable to obtain the permission they need.

A statement on the Mariner’s website said: “Despite our best efforts over the last few days, regrettably we have not been able to obtain the permission required to broadcast Saturday’s PlayOff Semi-Final at Blundell Park.

We wanted to inform you that, as a football club, we have done absolutely everything within our power to make this happen and we’d like to apologise to those supporters who’d hoped to watch the game here.

“Thank you once again for your magnificent support this season – it really is appreciated.”

It comes as only 1,200 tickets were allocated to Grimsby supporters at the Racecourse. Fans were queuing at Blundell Park in their masses yesterday morning as they got in line to try and get a ticket.

Town made it through to the next round after two very late goals against Notts County on Monday, May 23. Now, fans are hoping they can carry on the winning streak and beat the Welsh team for a place in this year’s final which is to be played at the West Ham stadium on Sunday, June 5.

Marinus Maasdam, said he was elated to be going to Wales with partner Christine Kirkham. He said: “I’m delighted to get the tickets, I’ve been to every home and away game this season and I genuinely think we’re going all the way this year. As soon as we got into the play offs I had a feeling we would go all the way.”
