THE hard-working team at Grimsby’s tip have started preparing for the holiday season by creating another winter wonderland display.

Last Christmas, staff at the Grimsby Community Recycling Centre were praised by the local community for creating a very imaginative display, using old tyres, traffic cones and other bits and pieces to make a Santa, a snowman and a giant Christmas tree.

They’re already making their festive creations for this year’s holiday season, even factoring in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The CRC site raised around £14,000 in donations last year for a range of local causes, including Young Carers, Not Home Alone, Harbour Place and Nunnys Farm.

A donation tin is going to be placed at the front of the centre again this year with the proceeds going to St Andrew’s Hospice, amongst other charities.

The tip currently has several tyre stacks painted as soldiers in honour of Remembrance Sunday on November 13, but site supervisor Matty Harlow says that Christmas decorations will be spread across the site as soon as the day of remembrance is over.

On the entrance to the tip, there are several smurf characters that are soon to be transformed into nutcrackers.

“We’ll be changing all of our smurfs by putting Christmas lights and hats on them,” said Matty.

“With it being the World Cup this year, we’re also gonna be doing some football players alongside our usual Christmas decorations.”

Mr Harlow has already started painting an old tyre stack, turning it into a Christmas tree and there are several other members of staff that have started working on a referee and a football player.

They hope to again bring in a considerable amount of money for local causes.

“We’re going to be dressing up as well, a lot of us usually come to work in Santa suits,” continued Matty.

“We just want to donate to any charities out there that are struggling right now.”
