NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

HURST LAMENTS AS TOWN ARE SECOND-BEST TO ROVERS

- By SAM ALLEN sam.allen@reachplc.com

PAUL Hurst believes not one of the Grimsby Town players that started their 3-1 defeat at home to Doncaster Rovers played well, as the Mariners were brought back to reality after a positive week in the cup.

A brace from George Miller either side of a brilliant half-volley goal from Harrison Biggins powered the visitors to their second win in five games under their new boss.

Doncaster responded well to a shocking FA Cup exit to Kings Lynn

Town last week to condemn the hosts to their third league defeat on the spin, as the inconsistencies in performances game-to-game continue for Town.

John McAtee’s goal-scoring contribution in his first appearance for the team since the opening day was the only positive for the Mariners boss, who said his side were not “aggressive enough” in their individual battles throughout.

Hurst admitted: “One to eleven, we were not good enough.

“There had to be a reality check of some sort after last week because we have to understand how hard it is to win games. We played too safe and had players passing backwards too often, which meant we didn’t do enough to threaten their goal.

“We lost too many individual battles, and I don’t think there was one player who was anywhere near their best.

“The crux of it is that we were second best. Despite the fact they scored early, I don’t think they necessarily came out more aggressive than us, but we didn’t do enough to stop the first goal.

“After that, for a long period I saw all eleven of their players in their own half, and they stayed compact.

“Physically, we weren’t good enough today; mentally, we weren’t good enough today, and if we turn up like that next week, we’ll get hammered. That’s football; you’ll have good days like last week, and you’ll have bad days, but you just have to ride it out.

“It’s hard enough to win a game of football when four or five of the players have an off-game, but when the whole team isn’t at it, and the opposition get the better of them in their individual battles, you’re not going to win a game.”
