Burglars break into site canteen and ‘make some bacon sandwiches’

CONTRACTORS ‘GUTTED’ AFTER SPATE OF BREAK-INS

CONTRACTORS at the former Poundstretcher store in Grimsby have been left “gutted” following a spate of breakins at their toilets and canteen in which the burglars even made themselves bacon sandwiches.

As the team of contractors work at the Victoria Retail Park site - which is set to be turned into a gym - burglars have targeted the units outside on two separate occasions.

On the night of Saturday, November 12, an air fryer and grill was stolen from the canteen, along with cutlery and food.

It follows a previous incident in October when the workers’ toilets were broken into and vandalised.

Site manager Paul Moore said: “We work 12 hours every day - we work away from home and I haven’t been home for seven weeks - and it’s your whole life.

“And you’re coming in to that and have to clean up all the mess afterwards.

“With the toilets, it took us ages to clean that up, and now I’m having to replace my air fryer and grill and all my cutlery. They’ve just wiped us out. I’m absolutely gutted.

“They even made themselves bacon sandwiches and there was rubbish all over the place.

“I would’ve thought it was probably kids, but we have no idea who is breaking in.

“The cabins are in an area where there’s not a lot of people around at night time. There’s not a lot of things going on in the area, so they’re just taking their chance.”

Paul said he believes the burglars used clips and shredded rods from the skip on site to break into the containers.

He continued: “They’ve taken them out of the skip and jammed the door in. They’ve done so much damage to the cabin just to get in and I dread to think what they would’ve done if they got into the main building.”

He said the team will be on site until December and that they usually like to decorate the cabins with Christmas decorations and lights, but that the recent events have made them wary to do so.

“Because we’re away from home we like to decorate the cabins, but now we’re thinking, ‘Do we do that?’ in case they come in and do it again and take it all away.”

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a burglary at a cabin on Victoria Retail Park, Victoria Street, Grimsby.

“It is believed that a person or persons gained entry to the cabin between 5.30pm on Saturday, November 12, and 8am on Sunday, November 13.

“It is reported that windows and doors were damaged, and various items were stolen from inside. If anyone has information regarding this, you can contact us on 101, quoting log 171 of 13 November.”

There’s not a lot of things going on in the area, so they’re just taking their chance.
