We have shown enough to show we’re a good side

HURST ON TOWN’S INCONSISTENCY

- By SAM ALLEN sam.allen@reachplc.com

PAUL Hurst gave an impassioned response to questions about the lack of consistency in Grimsby Town’s performance after suffering their third straight league defeat at the weekend. The Mariners could not get back on track in the league, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Doncaster Rovers after some positive performances in the cups.

The team’s temperamental form is an obvious point of concern and one Hurst, and his staff will look to address with another full week of training.

With just one league win in eight at home, where Town will take on secondplaced Stevenage next, the tough assignments just keep on coming as the team look to rediscover their best form.

Grimsby have had highs and lows in equal measure so far this season, and for that reason, Hurst believes it to be essential that he and his team remain “level-headed” to see out this poor run of league form.

“I feel we’ve shown enough this season so far to show that we can be a good side,” said Hurst.

“At the minute, if you look at our league record, it is pretty much even across the win, draw, and loss column, and that is where we are at this moment.

“That’s not a disaster; it might feel like it when we lose games like [Doncaster] at home, especially in front of another big crowd.

“Do we want to be better? Do I want us to be better? Do the fans? Yes, of course, but I think there is still a level of understanding from a lot of the fans.

“There is an element of reflection and being grateful, but right now probably isn’t the time to think that, and I get why people get upset, and I understand some of the shouts from the crowd we had [against Doncaster] about the way we were playing.

“We have to strive to be better, and it is an obvious thing to say that if you’re consistently good, you give yourself a better chance of moving higher up the table, and if you’re consistently bad, you’ll be near the bottom.

“We’ve probably been somewhere in between, and that is shown in where we are in the table, but I don’t think we’ve been that bad in truth.

“I can’t deny that it is three defeats in a row in the league, but I can’t go from waxing lyrical about the confidence in the team last week to saying it is the end of the world.

“We have to remain level-headed as a team, and that is where I come in as a manager to make sure we do that. Does it hurt right now, and am I annoyed? Yeah, I’m feeling more negative emotions which I will carry until the next game, but that is the life of a manager and a fan.”
