Amos has fine opportunity to stake his Town claim
WITH Grimsby Town’s firstchoice left-back Anthony Glennon expected to be out for weeks with injury, Danny Amos now has a chance to stake his claim in the team.
The 22-year-old was everpresent when he joined the Mariners in the second half of last season, but the summer return of Glennon has seen his opportunities become limited.
In his first audition to regain the starting spot, Amos put in a strong performance in Town’s 1-1 draw with Stevenage.
He was asked to break forward more playing as a wingback and got into some good positions to create opportunities with his crosses.
Paul Hurst was impressed with Amos’ output.
Hurst said: “Danny [Amos] is a great lad, and I have got no qualms with him whatsoever. If anything, we’ve sometimes said to him to try and be a bit nastier to go and show exactly what he can do. He’s got a good left foot and put some good deliveries in when he went on corner duty [against Stevenage] and got up and down the pitch quite well.
“We’ll criticise Danny for some of it, but we spoke all week about exploiting the space in the wide areas. I think they understood the message but we didn’t play the ball wide enough at the start of the game but as it progressed he became a good outlet for us.” While Glennon has been the preferred choice this season, the Town boss has left the door open for Amos to take back a more regular spot. Hurst has often preached about the importance of the squad, as chances will always come around.
“I’ve got no issues with Danny coming into the team,” added Hurst. “Anthony has done well, he’s got his quality of delivery and has scored a couple of goals. Genuinely speaking though, and I’m not just saying this because he’s injured now, I don’t think there is that much between them.
“In terms of competition, I wouldn’t class Danny as second fiddle. It’s just at this moment, that has been the case more often than not. He’s got an opportunity now to be the number one for the time being and then it is down to him whether he stays in the team or not by the time [Glennon] comes back.”
