A million-dollar question for Morgan
After hosting the 2022 World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar amid worries over the country’s human rights record, Morgan Freeman has come under fire. The tournament has been dogged by controversy over the Gulf state’s treatment of foreign employees, LGBT+ rights and social restrictions.
The fact that the Million Dollar Baby actor accepted the hosting job while having a net worth that is thought to be in the hundreds of millions has led many to accuse the Oscar winner of hypocrisy.
The American has been a vocal advocate for civil rights in the US, supporting gay marriage and founding non-profit organisations to advance equality in early childhood education, among other things.
Yet, unlike Dua Lipa, Shakira, and Rod Stewart, who all declined invitations to perform during the opening ceremony, Freeman appears to have put such causes to one side.
