AMOS: IT IS UP TO US TO SORT

STAR LAUNCHES STOUT DEFENCE OF BOSS HURST

DANNY Amos believes the issues Grimsby Town face are down to the players’ mindset that only they can fix as they look to turn their form and level of performance around.

The Mariners are five games without a win in the league and were knocked out of the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday night with a 1-0 defeat to Accrington Stanley at Blundell Park, where Town’s form has continued to falter.

Paul Hurst and his side have what is considered another ‘free hit’ in the FA Cup at the weekend against League One opposition when they travel to Cambridge United who are also not in good form.

“We’ll go again on Thursday in training,” said Amos.

“The gaffer has sent us a message in the changing rooms [after the Accrington game] on how we can brush up on a few things and get out of this rut we’re in.

“We’ve not been positive enough and I think it’s a mindset thing with the lads because I don’t think anyone in the group is incapable of playing that way, being positive and playing forward and seeing where it takes you. “We need to latch on to second balls and be a bit braver in possession and we weren’t that [against Accrington] and we paid the price by not scoring a goal and not creating from open play.”

When poor form and performances arise, questions are always asked of the manager and how he is preparing or setting the team up.

However, Amos was quick to defend his boss, saying it is down to the players to search within themselves and play with more bravery.

Amos added: “I don’t think we’re a million miles off where we need to be. The togetherness is there in the group as shown by how we dug in until the end against Stevenage to get the point and a deserved one.

“We’ll regroup and stick together, we’ve got Thursday and Friday to train well and prepare for Cambridge in a game where anything could happen. We need a boost as a team but that comes from within.

“We haven’t got a bad dressing room. The gaffer and [Chris Doig] can put on as many different sessions as they want and change the game plan, but when we’re not playing forward enough, being positive or creating chances that comes down to us as players to sort out.”
