Amos happy to embrace the challenge

-

DANNY Amos is embracing the challenge of playing as a wing-back in Grimsby Town’s current system and the prospect of regular game time with Anthony Glennon out with an injury.

The 22-year-old has started the last two and played the full 90 minutes in both as a left wing-back with Town playing a back three, which has seen Amos asked to do as much going forward as the defensive side.

With Glennon, who has been Paul Hurst’s choice on the left side this season, out for a couple of weeks Amos is left without competition in his position and will be expected to play a lot of minutes in the coming games, which the player is certainly looking forward to.

“I’ve enjoyed it on a personal note and want to show the gaffer that he can trust me whenever I am asked to play I’ll give 100% like I always do. [Playing as a wing-back] is something I am familiar with from my youth team days.

“I didn’t really play much of it at Doncaster but I did a bit at Port Vale and also for Northern Ireland and it is just something that I’ll continue to work on because I get confidence from going forward with the ball with the players that are around me.

The gaffer could ask me to play up top and I would do it, while I have this opportunity to play regularly I’ll keep learning and take every day and game as a new challenge.”

The Town boss had his say on the left-back situation after the Stevenage draw and believes there is a chance for Amos to become the first choice, depending on how he does while Glennon is out.

“I’ve got no issues with Danny coming into the team,” added Hurst.

“He’s got an opportunity now to be the number one for the time being and then it is down to him whether he stays in the team or not by the time [Glennon] comes back.”
