MOTORISTS faced long delays in Humberston as temporary traffic lights backed up traffic.

Tree specialists installed temporary traffic lights at the end of Wilton Road on Monday, November 28, while they were working near the nearby Tesco for safety reasons. However, chaos ensued as one driver said she was stuck in the queue for around 45 minutes and urged fellow motorists to avoid the area at all costs.

A lorry driver was waiting between 35 and 40 minutes to get from the end of the street to Abey Furnishings where he was making a delivery.

He said he was in traffic for over two hours but was pleased the shop is near the traffic lights so he could get out faster.

Shops on the industrial estate feared that the traffic could be detrimental to their businesses, as customers would be left struggling to get anywhere near them.

A staff member at Discount Home and Garden Centre said: “Nobody is going to do any business today.”

Martin, owner of Mower Services, added: “It’s been like this since about 10.30am this morning, it’s going to be murder.

“It’s because of the temporary traffic lights at the end.

“I’m not too worried but it’s definitely going to affect customers being able to come and go.”

Chris Carratt, owner of Ticker-T-Boo, continued: “It was terrible for business but more importantly it was terrible for our customers.

“There was nothing we could really do but I just felt sorry for anyone that got stuck in that traffic.”

The traffic lights were eventually turned off at around 1.15pm, allowing traffic to move as normal.

A similar incident happed back in April 2019, when angry motorists were “trapped for hours” while work was carried out on trees near the Pear Tree Pub.

Many drivers found themselves unable to leave the industrial estate for over two hours, with long tailbacks stretching down to the bottom of the road to the car parks of Ticker-T-Boo and Trotters Traders.
