Rose takes top award
CAPTAIN PICKS UP END-OF-SEASON TROPHIES
CAPTAIN Danny Rose was named Grimsby Town’s Player of the Year as the club handed out their end-of-season awards this week. The club’s top award was voted on by the fans, and top scorer Rose was chosen as the best performer, also collecting the Disabled Supporter’s Club and Travelling Supporter’s Player of the Year awards. Hull City loanee Harvey Cartwright was unable to see out the season in goal through injury but he swept up the Young Player of the Year awards at the club, and Abo Eisa’s magnificent strike against Mansfield Town back in August was picked as the goal of the season. Rose was the obvious choice for player of the year, having led the team in scoring with 15 in 41 appearances across all competitions, with three assists to add to that tally. It has always been about more than just the goals he provides with Rose, who has shown his leadership qualities straight away in his first season with the club, taking the armband permanently after the departure of Luke Waterfall.
His work off the ball in leading the forward press and his aerial presence in both boxes has won him plenty of plaudits amongst the Grimsby fanbase during an otherwise difficult season for the team. Being voted the best player this year by the fans is a recognition of the 30-year-old’s importance to the team. His season was ended slightly early after suffering an ankle ligament injury, but he should be ready to go for preseason and is likely to remain an important part of the team. After starting the season as the second choice to Jake Eastwood, Cartwright displaced the former in late October and kept his place until the start of April before suffering a quad injury that ended a productive loan spell. While he did struggle at times, he picked up three clean sheets in four games in March during a crucial period for the team in their survival push and overall, he would have earned some vital experience for his development as a young goalkeeper.
He made 32 appearances in total for his hometown club this season and will go back to his parent club Hull City a better player thanks to the opportunities he was given on loan.
