PLANS to convert a Methodist church into a home have been approved. The proposals to transform Humberston Methodist Church, off Humberston Avenue, into a four or more bedroom home were given the go-ahead by council officers. Grimsby-based company Will Capital Ltd is the applicant, which was behind the Beaconthorpe Church apartments project in Cleethorpes. The application for the Humberston church stated it was hoped it would be dealt with quicker than Beaconthorpe - and it has been.

With no objections at all, or a listed consent to contend with, it took less than three months from application publication to permission granted by council officers.

The conversion’s design includes a spacious-looking open-plan living room and kitchen.

Three car parking spaces would be created, with a gravel drive. Part of the rear of the church will be replaced by outdoor ceramic paving. Ettridge Architecture Ltd stated in an application document the Methodist Church is keen to ensure sites are sold off to individuals and organisations that respect the buildings and can afford necessary upkeep. Repeated reference was also made to Beaconthorpe Church, with the hope Humberston was decided on quicker. Because of its Grade II listing and flood risk issues, the application to turn Beaconthorpe into apartments took two years to get through planning. A fire, investigated as arson, caused extensive damage to the Cleethorpes church in October. Storms since have also damaged the now roofless structure.

An application was made earlier this spring for urgent repairs to its windows and wall openings. It currently remains pending. A document related to that states the Methodist Church is funding it as insurance money is not forthcoming.
