“Nobody in this band is the type of musician who practices six or eight hours a day and is really into the technical proficiency of playing an instrument. We’re more into how well we can do any particular song. Music by groups like the Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return to Forever is based on virtuosity, and that’s great. But we’re more based around composition, the music itself. Its structure is far more important to the group than how well we know our particular instruments — although nobody’s a slouch.
