Guitar World

LIKE A FINE WINE...

- DAMIAN FANELLI Editor-in-Chief

IS OUR COVER photo of Dave Grohl a bit on the “vintage” side? Why, yes it is. Good eye! Since the pandemic struck, we simply haven’t been able to assign that many photo shoots. For instance, if we wanted to get a new pic of Pat Smear to go with our two Foo Fighters features, we’d have to hire someone to track him down in the Canadian hinterland. (It sounds like he’s been listening to Cracker’s “Turn On Tune In Drop Out.”) Anyway, because this issue’s Foos coverage happens to focus on the band’s 25-plus years of existence, we decided to go the “classic” route with Grohl — as we did with the “of a similar vintage” Jimmy Page photo that graces our March 2021 cover. As it happens, both photos were shot by Ross Halfin.

BEHIND THE SCENES: In case anyone has ever wondered, this is what a typical issue of Guitar World looks like as we’re putting it together (This photo shows the March issue about three weeks into production). The program/software is called Studio, and every editorial page (and every ad) changes color as it gets closer to completion. We know we’re done when everything turns bright green. Once the issue has gone to the printer, it turns an incredibly reassuring dark blue. At which point, we immediately start working on the next one.

THIS MONTH’S WOODSHED PHOTO... features a Danelectro Baby Sitar! Some of the bands I’m in have been known to play a Beatles song or two, and let’s just say this “baby” comes in handy when performing “Norwegian Wood” or “Love You To.” It has a Gotoh pickup and weighs about as much as a large sandwich. Mmmmmm... sandwich...
