Busy day at police station as thousands flock through door

- By tom scargill

More than 5,000 people flocked through the doors of Halifax Police Station on Saturday as officers threw the doors open to visitors. Special tours took visitors around the station, including the custody cells, interview rooms and the CID room.

There was also the chance for people to have their photo on a wanted poster, while there was free advice on crime prevention.

The family fun day also featured free face painting, stalls and a collection of vintage and contemporary police vehicles.

Calder Valley Search and Rescue had a stall at the event, which also included fairground rides and chip pan fire displays.

Organisers were expecting a good turn out but were delighted so many people came for a look behind the scenes look at life at the Richmond Close site.

Police Constable Ben Doughty who helped to organise the event, said: “It was brilliant to have so many people come. The aim of the day was to meet with members of the public and show them all of the work that goes into policing the district and showing them the work that is put in 24 hours a day, 365 days a year which has resulted in significant crime reductions across Calderdale.

“And with so many people turning up we were able to reach a lot of people.

“People were literally queuing out of the door to have a tour of the police station and throughout the day as many as 2,000 people had a look around.

“Crowds were entertained by Total Awareness Promotions and acts included an Indian Dance Workshop with Annapurna dance, the West Yorkshire Police band and even the occasional dancing police officer!

“Officers were also able to display a top of the range sports car - a Ferrari 360 Spider - which had been seized by officers using the Proceeds of Crime Act.

“A great day was had by all and we have had some extremely positive feedback from the local community on social media channels.”
