John and Loraine held their annual Garden Party at St Matthew’s Church. The theme of the day was “Everything Yorkshire”. Yorkshire sayings such as “Put t’wood in t’oil”, “Tha’ can allus tell a Yorkshirem­an, but tha can’t tell ‘im much”, “Well, ah’ll go t’foot of ahr stairs” and “wer’tha born in a field?” were scattered around the church. Stalls included homemade crafts, cakes, bric-a-brac, jewellery, bring and buy sales, lucky dip, good as new, raffle prizes, competitio­ns and quiz. There was a fancy dress parade. Cream teas were served throughout the day and at lunch time pies from Robinson’s Farm shop, home made sausage plait, home made quiches, salads and sandwiches proved very popular. Proceeds for the day went to Overgate Hospice, Forget-MeNot Hospice, the Childrens’ Heart Foundation plus others. John and Loraine would like to thank everyone for their support. The Halifax Photograph­ic Society will resume after their summer break on Tuesday, September 16, 7.30pm at Northowram Methodist Church. The evening will be an “Open Evening” when the society hopes to welcome potential new members. The committee will be introduced to the members and the aims, and the 2014/2015 syllabus, of the society will be discussed. James Shepherd and his “Versatile Brass” are appearing in Concert at Northowram Methodist Church on Saturday, August 30, at 7.30pm. Conducted by Martyn Evans, “Versatile Brass” also includes Northowram-born Trevor Slade, who in his younger days sung in the choir at St Matthew’s Church. Trevor plays the trombone. The guest soloist is soprano Rachel Harrison. Tickets £8. James Shepherd and his daughter Helen of “Northowram News” are planning to Light Up Northowram this Christmas with Christmas lights. After experienci­ng the Christmas lights in Delph last Christmas, James, a keen gardener, is selling plants to raise money for the lights in the village. So far he has raised over £100. “Crafty Ladies” are a group of ladies who meet in Northowram Library on alternate Mondays from 4pm to 6pm. The Ladies are looking forward to a trip to “Event City” in Manchester on Friday, September 12. There will be an opportunit­y for the ladies to have “hands on” experience of many different crafts. The next meeting of the Shelf and Northowram Home and Wine Brew Circle will be held next Monday, August 25, at Coley Church Hall when the members will be holding an “Italian” evening. Members are asked to bring something “Italian” to eat and drink. The competitio­ns will be bitter, lager and dry stout. Anyone interested in wine and home brew are most welcome. St Matthew’s Church are planning a “Vintage Afternoon Tea” on Saturday, September 6, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. For £3.50 there will be a vintage afternoon tea of sandwiches, cream scones, cakes and tea or coffee, and also entertainm­ent from a singer singing old Victorian music. People are asked to bring their “pot” teapots for the afternoon. Proceeds to St Matthew’s Church. St Matthew’s are making plans for a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the church on Friday September 26 from 10am to noon. There will be a cake stall, raffle and refreshmen­ts. The Northowram Community Sports and Activity Club are holding a “Party on the Pitch” at the cricket field this Monday. This will be a fun day for the family. There will be fairground rides, games, stalls and a raffle. The event will raise money for Overgate Hospice.
