Due to the Maurice Jagger Centre being closed for refurbishment, this was the first meeting for two months for the retired Royal Mail, Post Office and British Telecom workers. Chairman Ken Radford welcomed 26 members including nine from the Bradford branch who came for their annual visit. Barry Chapman did a 32 question general knowledge quiz with both Ken Radford and David Pollard getting 27 correct, Ken getting the tie-break question correct first. There was a break for refreshments done by Patricia and Percy French and helpers, then an “Open the Box” game organised by John Pratt but no winner, after which there was a raffle done by Barbara Parker with 12 prizes. The Bradford contingent won six of them with the Halifax winners being Jean Greenwood, Dorothy Knappling, John Pratt, Harvey Eglen, David Pollard and Lynda Chapman. There followed a racing game organised by George Gamblin and Ken Radford with seven winners. Bradford secretary Maureen Langley thanked the meeting for their enjoyable afternoon. The next Halifax Branch meeting will take place at the Maurice Jagger Centre on Wednesday, September 10, at 2.30pm. For our June and August meetings we made use of our local attractions. In June we met at Manor Heath Park. We walked round the walled garden, the formal gardens and the Jungle Experience then relaxed with drinks and cakes at the outdoor tables outside the café, in lovely sunshine. In August we once again had lovely weather for our visit to Halifax Minster. As we had spent a previous meeting being guided round the inside, this time we concentrated on the outside. Member Joan Hutchison, guided us round, pointing out and explaining interesting features such as the memorial stones, the windows, the tombs, the buttresses and the sundial. After this we were ready for the tea and biscuits prepared by Diane Greaves and Barbara Holmes back at the Maurice Jagger Centre. We had no speaker for our July meeting but filled the time with our business meeting, chatting, enjoying tea and biscuits and deciding on a date and place for an outing. We finally decided on Whitby, on August 5. Five of us went and thoroughly enjoyed the sun, sea, sand and shops, not forgetting the fish and chips. Our next meeting will be on September 1, at 2.15pm at the Maurice Jagger Centre, where our speaker will be Betty Honour. All are welcome.
