Wins hearten pair ahead of busy weekend

Calderdale pair Barkisland and Elland head into a double weekend of away action in the Huddersfield League buoyed by good wins last Saturday. Barkisland, who go to thirdfrom-bottom Slaithwaite tomorrow and then eight-placed Honley on Sunday, strengthened their hold on third place in the Premiership with an 88 run success over Scholes.

Jamie Summerscales, a former man of the match in the Halifax League’s Parish Cup final for SBCI, hammered an impressive 82 as Barkisland posted a challenging 258 for eight.

Scholes were never in the hunt with Chris Williams ( four for 63) and Matthew Steers (four for 71) the main architects of their downfall as they perished for 180.

Elland are breathing slightly easier ahead of a trip to leaders Hoylandswaine and Sunday’s match at eigthplaced Golcar.

The fourth-from-bottom side won by four wickets at Meltham thanks to Fahid Rehman.

The opener made 93 not out as Elland overhauled the home side’s 148.

Alistair Finn and Wasim Qasim had earlier claimed three wickets each for the Hullen Edge men. Todmorden will host an Under 19s county game between Lancashire and Yorkshire next Wednesday and Thursday. Admission is free and the bar and tea room will be open.
