Aspin happy with second-half showing

Neil Aspin said he got the response he wanted as FC Halifax Town produced three second-half goals to beat Welling 3-0 at the Shay.

Despite a goalless firsthalf, a brace from Richard Peniket and Marc Roberts’ second goal of the season helped Town maintain their 100 per cent start to the season.

Aspin admitted his side weren’t good enough in the opening half but was pleased with what he saw after the interval.

He said: “The first-half was poor, very pedestrian, there was no tempo to the game.

“Although Welling weren’t causing us any problems I needed to make a couple of changes at half-time.

“I felt I got a response, it was a lot livelier, a lot more tempo and we put them under a lot more pressure.

“We dominated the second-half and deserved to win the game.”

Peniket and fellow substitute Jamie Jackson both made impressive second-half cameos, and Aspin was happy with the duo’s impact, with Peniket notching his first goals for the club.

Aspin said: “Richard’s only young, he’s still learning the game. It’s a big club for him and it takes time.

“The best thing for any forward is to get goals, he got two today and he contributed well.

“It’ll be great for his confidence and I want as many players as possible on form so it makes the job to pick the team difficult.”

Aspin admitted his side needed to get out of the blocks quickly, with Town joint-top of the table with Forest Green, the only other side to win all three of their opening fixtures.

He added: “It’s a great start. I think we needed to get points in the first three games.

“If we hadn’t it would have affected confidence and we knew with two games at home we had to try and get some points.”
