Local Territorials volunteer

-

The 4th Battalion of the Duke of Wellingtons (West Riding) Regiment were the local territorial unit. They were made up almost exclusively of Calderdale men. Their role in the event of war was to guard the country against invasion and as can be seen they were on the East coast guarding the ports of Hull and Immingham. It is not generally known that the Territorials were under no obligation to serve overseas and had to volunteer to do so before they could be sent abroad. The “correspondent” tells us that most of the battalion had done so although they would not be deployed to France for some months yet, allowing them to complete their training and to be re-equipped.
