Park’s Hull goes one better after winning singles title

The finals of the Calderdale Tennis League Open Tournaments took place at Rastrick Tennis Club and were played in harsh conditions with blustery wind making shot play difficult. Despite the elements the players produced some quality tennis worthy of the finals.

The men’s singles was won by Paul Hull, from Park Tennis Club, last year’s runner up.

He overcame Alasdair Whiteley, from Cragg Vale, in a hard hitting encounter in straight sets.

Hull then went on to partner Andy Smith to take the Men’s Doubles title. They recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mark Sutcliffe (Wellholme) and Peter Windle (Queens).

The ladies singles saw a first title for Todmorden’s Olivia Marshall who beat defending champion Ann Rushworth, of Wellholme Tennis Club, 6-1, 6-4.

The closest match of the finals came in the Mixed Doubles Open where Olivia Marshall and Chris Whalley recovered from losing the first set to come back and beat Cragg Vale’s Jonathan Cooper and Suzanne Celensu 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
