Holme deserved winners of new cup
Hollins Holme were the fitting winners of the inaugural Jake Booth Memorial Trophy following their 3-1 success over league champions Carrington on Savile Park last Sunday.
The silverware was donated by Holme boss Joel Booth in memory of his son who passed away last year and formed the centrepiece of the Halifax Sunday League’s annual Charity Day.
As a newly promoted team Hollins Holme knew they were facing the best team in the di- vision in which they will play this season so it would be an uphill task.
Both teams were evenly matched for the first 20 minutes with the Holme defence keeping Carrington’s forwards tightly marked.
However, in the 30th minute, the ball arrived at the feet of Jordan Coduri gave ‘keeper Ben Norman no chance from 25 yards .
Just before half time referee Mike Sharmen gave Hollins a free kick just outside the penalty area and Andy Butterworth forced a great save from Carrington’s ‘keeper but the ball fell to George Bamford who made it all square.
The second half started very much the same as the first with both teams creating chances.
Hollins took the lead when the ball was cleared leaving George Bamford to round the last defender and score.
Jamie Gwilliam was playing his first ever open age game and he went close with a half chance for Hollins before Bamford completed his hattrick and secured the victory.
