Easter walk raises £2,000 for Smartmove

- By Tom Scargill

An Easter walk in aid of Calderdale Smartmove has raised £2,000 for the local charity. A group of half- a- dozen friends, including Smartmove’s fundraising and relationship manager Craig George, took up the challenge of walking from the most eastern part of Calderdale to the most western point and back again over the Easter weekend.

Calderdale SmartMove assists homeless and vulnerably housed people to find accommodation in Calderdale.

Craig said: “It was hard work but worth it.

“There were five walkers and one runner, who passed us on her way back and she looked like she hadn’t even set off.

“But to get £2,000 is amazing - we had a really good response.

“There were a great bunch of people doing it.

“The weather was lovely on both days and everyone enjoyed it, although the walk turned out to be 46.4 miles not 41 miles so it required an extra effort by everyone.”

Craig said the money raised will make a big difference to the charity.

“That money means we would be able to pay for 500 people to attend an education lesson such as a job club, or a CV writing class or an IT class as we pay for people’s travelling costs,” he said.

“That’s a good few months of fundraising one big chunk, so it was a really big effort.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part and everyone who donated, who there are too many of to mention.

“But a big thank you to Ploughcroft, who made a a big donation.

“We’re definitely going to do it again next year, either the same thing or maybe something a bit different.

“Hopefully we’ll get more people involved to make it even bigger and better.”
