David: ‘I’m the man to walk 1,000 miles’

- By Laura Neve Tacey

A man who has dropped seven stone is walking 1,000-miles to raise money to build a new sixth form centre for Calderdales’ only special high school. David Fotheringham, 36, of Savile Park, Halifax, was so inspired by the work of Ravenscliffe High School, Halifax, staff during employment visits he wanted to do something to help the special school achieve their dream to build a new £3m sixth form and community centre at nearby Spring Hall.

Lloyds Banking Group employee and Scotsman David is a fan of the band Proclaimers and that’s where the idea to walk 1,000 miles was born.

“Being a Scotsman, I’m a fan of the Proclaimers and they sang ‘I would walk 500 miles’ - and 500 more so that’s what I decided to do.”

In nine months, David has lost an impressive seven-stone and now weighs 17 stone.

“The challenge combines two great elements - I’m losing weight and getting fitter and I’m raising money for fantasic kids and an inspiring school.

“If you’d have said I would be doing this a year ago I wouldn’t have believed you. I love walking now.”

David has already walked 300 miles and hopes to smash his target of £1,000 for 1,000 miles by the end of the year.
