Up and coming hub gets a scrub
by An asset transfer with its roots in the elements has undergone a major facelift in a massive community effort. Dozens of volunteers grafted on Sowerby Bridge’s Fire and Water project to take the project to the next stage of progression to a multi-functional community hub.
Volunteers cleared debris, boarded windows and prepared the ground floor of the old fire station ready for painting.
Director of Fire and Water, Emma Bolger, said: “The event was fantastic. We had more than 60 volunteers and it was a great community effort with local residents volunteering, lending scaffolding towers, equipment and the The Works supplied tea and coffee.”
The town’s former swim- ming pool, council chambers and fire station on Hollins Mill Lane were transferred to the charitable organisation by Calderdale Council. But the lease with the council has not yet been signed.
“We have to raise around £10,000 for the insurance. So far we have raised £4,000.
“Until we sign the lease we don’t have ownership of the buildings and can’t apply for the funding we need, its chicken and egg but we have to stay positive and keep doing what we can to raise funds.”
The former fire station has been brought up to standard to host public events.
The public is invited to an evening of entertainment at Fire and Water’s Springthing - with eccentric dancing, music, circus entertainment and more madness on April 24, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 - contact geoff@geoffamos. com. Profits will go to Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water.
