Eureka up for award from Visit England

- By Tom Scargill

Eureka! The National Children’s Museum has been named as a finalist in the Access for All category of the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence for the third year running. Eureka! was awarded bronze in 2013 and silver in 2014, so this year the popular, inclusive children’s museum is hoping for some gold to add to their awards cabinet.

Eureka!’s programme of inclusive activities and services, called Access All Areas, continued this year thanks to funding from The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund.

As a finalist, Eureka! now goes forward to the glittering Awards Ceremony which is being held on Monday, May 11 at the Sage Gateshead.

The awards will take place in the North East for the first time, coinciding with an exciting year that also sees Rugby World Cup 2015 coming to Newcastle.

The VisitEngland Awards attracted a total of 345 applications. Eureka! will have to wait until the awards ceremony to find out which award they will receive.

All finalists are guaranteed to receive either a gold, silver, bronze or highly commended award.

Leigh-Anne Stradeski, Chief Executive of Eureka! said: “We’re incredibly proud of our inclusive museum and the team here at Eureka! is dedicated to ensuring that all families can access a great day out.

“To have been honoured yet again in the VisitEngland awards is fantastic news – especially in the year that we boosted our inclusive facilities with the opening of our Changing Places washroom – funded by the SITA Trust - and our drop-in Sensory Room.

“We’re always learning from our visitors and working with local children to explore additional ways to make Eureka! an accessible day out for all families, so this year we’re hopeful that we can bring the gold award back to Yorkshire.”
