Pupils stay awake to raise vital funds for charity

- By Jess Corne

Calder High Sixth Form students and staff recently ran the first of three planned sponsored stay awakes for students in Years 7, 8 and 9. The aim of these stay awakes is to raise funds for the school’s annual Year 13 group project, which this year is set to take 10 students on a once in a lifetime trip to Kathmandu, Nepal to work with underprivileged children within the region.

The funds will also be used for the project next year to Sri Lanka.

Students from Year 7 took part in a sponsored stay awake in the sixth form block, from 7.30pm on Friday until 7.30am on Saturday morning. In this time they took part in various activities such as quizzes, a disco, game tournaments and film viewings, all in a bid to stay awake.

Despite a few tired heads, they eventually succeeded and in so doing, raised over £1,200 for the project, taking the sixth formers one step closer to their £25,000 goal.

As a student who took part in the fundraising, I would like to personally thank our headteacher Mr Guise for allowing us to run this event on the school grounds and the staff, particularly Miss Hart- ley for their constant work to organise these events, as well as my fellow sixth formers who helped to keep the younger students entertained throughout the night. A huge congratulations to the year ten geographers who went on a field trip to York.

The students were cooperative, friendly and polite when talking to members of the public and were commended for their outstanding behaviour.

Students were diligent in collecting their data through traffic and pedestrian counts, land– use mapping and taking photographs which will all be used for geography control-

Finally, a very well done to all of the Year 7 students who took a part in the event and whose sponsorship has raised funds towards such a worthy cause. led assessment about how traffic is managed in York city centre.

A huge well done to all the students for their mature, responsible behaviour and for managing not to get lost. A big thank you, to many of the staff who worked hard to make such a fantastic day possible.
