Calderdale take the derby spoils

-

Calderdale finished a largely disappointing West Yorkshire Super League programme on a high with a 46-30 derby win over Old Brodleians. Last Saturday’s result at Whitcliffe Mount means Brods have gone through the season without a league win, and make a quick return to the Premier, while Calderdale have avoided the two automatic relegation slots.

However, Calderdale’s season isn’t over because they must meet Tornadoes, who have finished third in the Pre- mier, to decided who plays in the top flight next season. That match is on April 25.

Brods have stuggled for players for most of the season but they still put up a good fight.

Calderdale got off to a slow start as their new player combinations bedded in.

Captain Sophia Boothroyd moved out of her usual defensive position to play goals hooter but had to swap to goal attack as Janey Parker suffered a knee injury in the first minute.

Paula Hird put the shooter bib on for the second quarter and the low level feeds from her Towergate partner Hollie Thomas made life difficult for the Brods defence.

Calderdale’s half leadof 20-14 was extended to 36-20 at the end of the third quarter, helped by brilliant mid-court interceptions from Megan Woodworth, player of the match Suzanne Forrest and Kate Ineson.

That 16-goal lead was retained throughout the last 15 minutes.

Premier Division side Calderdale seconds are also in the relegation play-offs, against Rothwell, and the club’s thirrds have gone down to the third division of the West Yorkshire League next season.
