Town rolls back the years for first ever vintage celebration

- By Felicity Macnamara

There was a celebration of all things vintage as visitors to Halifax’s first ever 1940s weekend were transported to a bygone era. Dressed up to the nines, many visitors stepped out in style as they donned fabulous forties-style outfits to get into the spirit of the occasion.

And with guest appearances from King George VI and president Ike Eisenhower, the past was brought to life for crowds of visitors from all generations in the atmospheric surroundings of Southwood Club, Birdcage Lane.

Including vintage stalls, military vehicles, living history displays, musical entertainment from 1940s singer Katie Mustang, free Swing Jive lessons and much more, there was something for all the family to enjoy.

The weekend was master- minded by 40s enthusiasts Sue and Steve Woods.

“It will absolutely be happening again next year,” Sue said.

“It went really, really well, there was a fantastic atmosphere and these sort of events really get the spirit of 1940s back, you make lots of friends.

“It was like a massive family party, we had a lot of fun and there were people dressed up and having a good laugh,

“We had four different schools there on the first day and that was really good because they could talk to the different characters and get involved.

“At the end we took them into the dance hall to do some 1940s dancing and they loved it.

“The Sunday morning was also great as we had a service and then speeches from King George VI and Ike Eisenhower.

“We now know how we can make the weekend even bigger and better for next year.”

Money raised from the event will be donated to military charity Help the Heroes.
