Thank you for sharing your war stories

-

We are pleased to say we have been quite a response to our request for Calderdale Great War information.

Below is just a very brief summary of what has been sent.

At the appropriate time we hope to include more details of these remarkable stories into our real time Courier features and hopefully add some research of our own.

Some of these stories are accompanied by considerable documentation but we wish to emphasise that we are interested in all manner of information both large and small.

It may be that you are simply able to clarify something like a name, where somebody lived, who their living descendants are, provide a photograph etc, Please don’t think we are only interested in soldiers. There is far less information about life on the home front and we are particularly interested in stories, photographs and documentation on these. Where are all the descendants of the munition workers? We would love to hear about them! Ian Shepley-Brook – spotted a relation of his, Harold A Brook, who was a civilian prisoner in Germany. Judith Guy has sent details of her grandfather, Charles Landale, who was a reservist at the start of the war and a recipient of the DCM. Christina Butterick – has sent postcards, photographs and service history of her grandfather, Isaac Nicholl, who served with the Royal Garrison Artillery in Gallipoli and the Western Front Peter Hanson – his Great Uncle, Herbert Hanson, was a guard at the Wakefield POW Camp at Lofthouse and has several items donated to him by one of the inmates.

Many thanks for all of your interesting replies and please keep them coming.
